Professional Expertise

I have a Bachelor of Social Science in Human Services, A Bachelor of Social Work (Monash University) Masters of Narrative Therapy and CommunityWork (Dulwich Centre/Melbourne University). In my role as a clinician I have the advantage of understanding both the neurological and personal factors that can impact mental health symptoms. As a social worker I can also understand a persons broader life context from a social and holistic perspective. My knowledge of narrative therapy also informs my position that the individual is not the problem, rather the problem is the problem. I also work with a broad and eclectic tool kit and draw from methodologies that include a solutions focus, strengths perspectives and systems theory. Ultimately I aim to work from a non-judgemental and therapeutic perspective and really embrace the qualities of each person I meet.

I am also an experienced professional supervisor and currently completing an advanced supervision course with the AASW.

Highly Recommended

“I first sought help during what was the most tumultuous time of my life. Tony was my third counsellor. I wish he had been my first.

In my first session with Tony I felt heard, understood and valued. While a lot of our discussions were on how to deal with difficult and complex situations, it was his reference to the vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system that allowed me to compartmentalise the emotions and trauma of others, to focus on my own mental health and wellbeing. This was paramount in me turning a corner and possibly the best learning and reminder. To focus on ourselves first, is not something easy or natural to some of us, especially when others in our lives are in so much pain and cycles of abuse and instability.

As we continued with our sessions Tony was also able to support me with reading material to gain understanding and insights into my own situation. In doing so he built up my knowledge, skills and ability to take control and empower myself to move forward.

I would very much recommend Tony to any person dealing with grief and loss, complex personality traits but also the often small and perceived insignificant moments in life that can derail us somewhat”.

Trauma Healing Journey

” I was referred to Tony Waller by my doctor after a diagnosis of PTSD.  Not being one for counselling I was somewhat reluctant but on meeting Tony I immediately felt welcome and comfortable. I’ve now been working with Tony for 3 years now.

After receiving the diagnosis, I realised I’d been living with PTSD, from childhood trauma, most of my life.  It was a lot to comprehend but I could finally make sense of much of my behaviour throughout my life.  Not only was I coming to terms with the impact of living with PTSD I was also dealing with health and housing issues. Tony helped me through some of the most challenging years of my life and I am deeply grateful for this.

It was a huge relief  for me to talk to someone about my experiences of trauma with no judgement, no triggers, just focused listening, giving reflections, sharing information and knowledge. Working with Tony has supported my healing journey.  Now with a better understanding about the psychological and physical impact of trauma I am better equipped to deal with situations when they arise.  So although I can’t always control my response to triggers I now have strategies and resources to assist me in managing them”.
